Lesson notes 11/11/2011

Following my feedback from my first draft of my dissertation, i am starting to feel slightly more motivated than before after achieving the mark i did, from the feedback given i think i need to organise my chapters more clearly and consise so that it flows better.I think i need someone to read it for me and give me their opinion as i feel i am so used to it i have ‘made’ sense of it.

Analysis and paragraph writting LESSON!!

Think about images and writting, film, text ads etc ( all types of  content).Thinking about things in more depth, SEMIOTICS!!! Quotes always introduce and analyse quotes, never just add them in.The reader needs to determine what you are thinking a key aspect.Show my thinking to show my engagement within the research. Why are the quotes there??

Analysing, brief review of semiotics, content and context, visual anaysis

Paragraph writting, form, context, structure.

Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols, developed from linguistics, semiotics can anaylse anything from moving image to text to an object. Its a system of anaylsis. What is a sign?? A sign is anything that makes a meaning

” Nothing is a sign unless it is interpreted as a sign”

A sign is a meaingful unit which is interpreted as ‘standing for’ something other than itself. The signifyer and signified the two things a sign is made from.

A signifier is what you see and hear the physical thing, the object its self without the meaning attached.

A signified is the meaning the thought and idea, the mental concept.

Jasper Johns flag 1954, Painting, signifier, colours red blue white stripes flag the connotations of the image. The signified being the meaning of the stars and stripes, meaning as a whole the deconnotations of the image, more mental processes into the image.Different people will percieve it differently depending on culture etc.

Saussure & the sign as a dyad

The sign, Signified, signifier ( material/ mental concept)

You need both parts to create a sign.

“DOG” is made up of the signifiers d, 0 and g…….The word promts the hearer to think of a mental concept of ‘dogness’…………..barks etc

Advertising and semiotics….The reading of images depends on Cultural and contextual understanding, where it was produced and found.Images etc may make sense only in a particular area ie the sapranos ad will only make sense in new york it would n’t make sense anywhere else.

Thinking about images; content and context

content – what is the image of and what info does it give us

Context – context in which image is made – social processes in which it is produced – context in which the image is seen – mechanisms governing its circulation and consumption. ( I NEED TO APPLY THIS TO EVERYTHING I ANALYSE IN MY DISSERTATION BOOKS FILMS AND ADS!!)

Three part visual analysis- Nan Goldin, One month after being beaten battered 1984

Anecdotal:Describe the artwork in general, the medium, genre (landscape, still life etc) Is it representational and does it tell a story, what isit s background and historic context, why was the artwork  created.

Formal: Explain the mechanics of the work.Discuss focal point, colour, texture, movement wetc.

Symbolic: The hidden meaning, discuss gestures, object, lighting, colour, and explain how the anecdotal and the formal aspects of the artwork create a synthesis which imbues the image with meaning.

Paragraph writting!!!

Each paragraph should portray a point idea, therefore each time you start a new topic you need a new paragraph. No long bulks of texts and avoid long sentences.Use short sentences and make very direct points.

1.introduce the topic, what you want to tell the reader.

2.give supporting information, where are the key elements, how can i describe it in order to giver a fuller view of the idea.

3.Conclude, what does it mean, do not assume

A paragraph needs to be a least 6 sentences and should have a concluding sentence.
